The Essay

I squandered neurons in my youth learning computers in Minnesota (see pic); now I make my living in Silicon Valley striving (slowly) to get into management. I have lots of friends. I love San Francisco, and often show visitors around the city. I love words; Mom wasn't an academic but she taught me to interrupt a meal to look up an unknown word arising at the dinner table (this was my greatest gift from her). I like marble (beauty revealed through a masculine medium), have had the very-sparse part of my beard removed with electrolysis so I don't have to shave, and keep my pink watch on military time. Guess that makes me slightly idiosyncratic. Please write, please love me. But I'm not desperate for attention.

The Lovetastic Interview
Where would you rather be right now?

Rome, Paris, Prague, Kosice, Arunachala.

Is there any value in suffering?

The Buddha taught of the four visions: sickness, old age, death, & the wandering mendicant. Remembering these when we are aware of our infirmity and our fleeting youth reminds us that we are right where we're supposed to be.

What books are near you at the moment?

"Your Money or Your Life," "Guns, Germs & Steel" (ask me if I've read it yet), the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary.

Can you curse in any foreign languages?

No, but I can say "beer" in several.

Have you ever heard voices?

God spoke to me once many years ago. I listened, but then did such a good job practicing detachment from the world that I lost track of what he/she said. That'll teach me. And I love the words glossolalia and cryptoglossia.

What makes you confused?

The question "What do I want to do with my life?" Trying to come up with clever answers to these questions.

What is the farthest you've ever been from home?

Japan & Russia; family reunions sometimes.

What is the greatest mystery that you would like to be solved?

Who stole the ruby slippers from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, MN?!? Glad I saw them before they were purloined.

What is the first interesting word to pop into your head after reading this question?

Paradigmatic. I love words where the silent "g" becomes hard in adjectival form: paradigmatic, phlegmatic, diaphragmatic.

"Life is a comedy to those who think and a tragedy to those who feel." Is life a comedy or a tragedy to you?

As a nominal zen buddhist, I'm compelled to be elusive on this one. The sky is blue, the grass is green.

Do you put product in your hair?

No; too much bother. But I do wash my hair every morning to minimize the evidence that my hair's thinning on top.

Do you subscribe to the old-school top/bottom dichotomy?

No. But I enjoy discussing it because it helps me understand gay identity better. And I like saying "But I'm a top!" while evidencing otherwise.

What is your favorite building?

The basilica of St. Peter in Rome.

Have you ever worked at manual labor?

No; picture of me as a 16-year old professional computer programmer. I did sell Christmas cards as a youngster (though I was raised an atheist).

Describe your taste in clothes.

Preppy wanna-be; solid colors; conservative; cashmere sweaters; casual; don't get too dirty or sweaty. Never wear more than one collar at once; never wear cardigans or overalls or camouflage. Drag on occasion, but I don't get too pretty.

"Tell me what you like, I'll tell you what you are." -John Ruskin
Favorite books

The OED. Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior. Mohandas K. Gandhi's Autobiography. Freakonomics.

Favorite music

Ferron, Holly Near, Meatloaf, Kelly Clarkson, Mika

Favorite film(s)

Fargo, Fatal Attraction, Crash, Go

Favorite art

Beauty rendered in masculine media, like marble quarries, or Meatloaf's song "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer than They Appear": "We got our dreams reborn and our upholstery torn". Rossmary Valverde, Olbinsky.

Favorite ideas

I'm getting radicalized about gay marriage. Why settle for what straight people have?

You deserve love. So does your future husband.
Lovetastic is a hopeful alternative for gay men who want to love and be loved.
