The Essay

After several decades spent in Houston I finally decided to return to the city in which I was born. With all of the many thousands of gays living in New York, it is amazing how challenging it is to meet someone. Everyone is so busy! And clubbing is not my cup of tea anyway, so online encountering is the way to go.
I love this city because any night of the week I can go to the opera, the theater, a museum, etc. and see world-class art. Art has always been the major nourishment for my soul (read between the lines...not into organized religion). And a clever man can see shows for much less than a typical tourist can.
I am looking for a man with whom I can pass amiable hours in both physical, intellectual and emotional satisfaction, or a danged good attempt at same. And a good laugh is as satisfying as a good orgasm. But it had better be a REALLY good laugh!

The Lovetastic Interview
If you had to fight in a war, from any century, which one would you pick?

Probably the Peloponnesian Wars. All those sexy Spartans! Sure, I would be killed in an instant, but the eye candy would make my last moments just scrumptious!

Where in the world would you like to bring a friend?

Paris. I lived there once upon a time and would love to share the city with someone. Plus I haven't been there in years. I would love to go back.

If Hamlet invited you on a date, would you accept?

OK look. Hamlet invited a bunch of actors into his home, lectured them on how to do their jobs, then spent the entire show heckling from the audience, hectoring his step-father, kissing on his girlfriend, and explaining the plot to all the rest of the audience. This is the LAST person I would want to take to see a Broadway show!

Is this your first time posting an online personal?

No, I have tried other sites, but most of them don't take too kindly to gentlemen of "a certain age". As the saying goes, No one loves you when you're old and gay. At least I think that's the way it goes. Anyway, I've been there. Moved on.

Are you doing anything to stop global warming?

I moved from Houston, where owning a car is required. Now I walk and take the subway. It's a start.

Do you own a gun?

Hell no!

Do you have cable?

Yeah! I can't see shows every night, and sometimes you just don't feel like reading, so cable fills those moments. And how else would I see what copulating cougars look like?

Do you like your work?

My job pays my bills. What I love to do is write, but if I had to write for a salary I would probably lose my passion for it. And that isn't worth it to me! I am not the sort of person who defines himself by how he spends his 9-5 hours. It's the rest of my life that defines me.

Business class or coach?

We all like to be pampered from time to time, n'est-ce pas?

Describe your feelings on religion.

I was brought up in an Irish Catholic household and maintained my ties to religion more to keep my parents happy than for any dedication to it. I consider religion as an important course of study...but for heaven's sake (literally) you need to graduate from that school at some point or another!

Favorite books

I am an avid reader, but for pleasure I prefer comic novels, histories and biographies. My first "adult" book was Auntie Mame and I shudder when I think how deep an influence it had on my life.

Favorite music

I am first and foremost an opera queen. But I also love classical, big band, musicals, pop, jazz...OK let's just list what kinds of music I don't like. C&W and hip-hop/rap. Pretty much anything else has space on my iPod. I love listening to the iPod on the random access feature. That way I am always pleasantly surprised by what comes up next.

Favorite film(s)

Hoo-boy! This could run on for pages! My favorite film is Children of Paradise. Off the top of my head there is also Gone With the Wind, Bride of Frankenstein, Amelie, Seven Samurai, Singin' in the Rain, Star Wars, Long Days Journey Into Night, The Lord of the Rings, Airplane!, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, The Women, Freaks, All About Eve, Dr. Strangelove...getting the picture?

Favorite art

All over the place here, from cave paintings to Renaissance to Flemish to Modern. I love Rembrandt, Rothko, Turner, Leonardo, Vermeer, Magritte, Dali, Picasso, Monet and Michelangelo (to make it an even 10).

Favorite ideas

We have been put here to improve the world. Anything that smacks of destruction, fundamentalism or any other backward-looking philosophy is anathema to me. The past is to be built upon, not lived in.

Other interests

I like to get out of town from time to time to visit nature, to hike, to see other places. But New York is a mini-vaction in itself. The architecture, the galleries, the people on the street...it's all a source of fascination. I only wish there were enough hours in the day to see as much of it as I would like to.

You deserve love. So does your future husband.
